Hyper-prolific sows in modern pig production have intensified the challenges to the newborn piglet. Large litters result in piglets born with lower average weight, more competition for milk, higher variability of weight at weaning, and, higher mortality. Piglets with low weight at weaning (immature) are more prone to post-weaning diarrhea, respiratory diseases, and to immunodepression due to the stressing transition from passive to active immunity (vaccination), having their post-weaning growth rate compromised up to the finishing, with no chance to catch-up. Consequently, they require longer periods to achieve their final weight and, therefore, they cost more to be raised. As such, having heavier piglets at weaning and nursery phases is key to improve productivity at lower cost.

Initial growth, weaning and transition from passive to active immunity (vaccination) are events with extremely high rate of cell multiplication, which demand large amounts of nucleotides that cannot be supplied by the regular diets, obliging the organism to synthetize them at the cost of energy, amino acids and time.
